Background
Local and regional communities, municipalities and regions have a decisive role in making sustainability in the energy field happen. Outstanding projects implemented by local and regional communities around the globe demonstrate clearly that, in addition to environmental benefits, energy efficiency and renewable energy sources contribute to employment and local economic growth. Numerous communities - be they cities, counties, districts, regions, states or islands - have made a commitment to a sustainable energy future by setting ambitious targets and implementing concrete actions to achieve these targets. Instead of waiting for others to act, they have made sustainable production and use a part of their daily life and have demonstrated the practical viability of different - more sustainable - energy production and consumption patterns. "Think globally, act locally" has long ago ceased to be an empty slogan for many mayors, councillors, employees in public administration or for local citizen groups, associations and local businesses - they suit their actions to their words! The conference "Energy Sustainable Communities" intends to highlight the importance of local and regional energy strategies for achieving environmental and economic sustainability in Europe and beyond. It will motivate and inspire stakeholders from around the globe to take action and show concretely how sustainable energy projects can be initiated, implemented and financed. Successful examples from different parts of the world will therefore be at the centre of the event, additionally participants can gain valuable insights in innovative technologies and financing solutions. The conference is part of the FP5 project "Energy Sustainable Communities".
