Young Energy Researchers Conference

The 2 conferences present the work and achievements of young researchers in the fields of biomass and energy efficiency. They offer an opportunity to interact with researchers and industry experts from all over the world.

Seamus Hoyne, Member of the Scientific Committee
Young researchers (born after 1985) are invited to submit contributions.
Deadline: 12 October 2020.

A high-level scientific committee selects papers for oral or poster presentation. The organiser of the WSED, the OÖ Energiesparverband, covers the costs of accommodation, meals, participation and local transport (3 conference days) for up to 60 selected participants (between 23 - 26 February). Submissions are invited from any scientific field (e.g. technology & engineering, economic and social sciences, architecture, law, arts, etc.) and must be in English only. The 2 best contributions are honoured with the awards "Best Young Energy Efficiency Researcher" and "Best Young Biomass Researcher" and will receive 1,000 Euro each as prize money. The Young Energy Researchers Conference builds upon seven very successful events (held from 2012 to 2020), each of them attracting contributors from more than 25 countries.

What are the "WSED"?

The World Sustainable Energy Days (WSED) are an annual conference held at the end of February/beginning of March in Wels/Austria. With more than 650 participants from over 50 countries each year, the World Sustainable Energy Days are one of Europe's largest annual conferences on sustainable energy.

Who is the target group of Young Energy Researchers Conference? Who is considered as "young" for this conference?

The target groups for presenters at this conference are:

  • young researchers
  • students working on advanced degrees (e.g. master's degrees, PhDs, etc.)
  • young professionals

Papers can be submitted by researchers born after 1985.

In addition to individuals, groups from the same or different universities or research organisations are invited to submit joint papers. In case of selection of the paper, the organiser will support the participation of max. 3 young researchers per selected paper. Papers submitted by groups should mainly be based on work carried out by young researchers.

Which kind of papers can be submitted? What should the papers look like? How is the submission process organised?

Papers should focus on the subjects of:

  • biomass or
  • energy efficiency

Submissions are welcome from all scientific fields (e.g. technology & engineering, economic and social sciences, architecture, law, arts, etc.) and must be in English only.

Contributions must be submitted using the online submission form. It is a "one stage" submission process, meaning that the evaluation of the papers will be based on the information received by 10 October 2019. Therefore, the organisers recommend that you do not only submit short abstracts (ideally: papers between 10 - 15 pages, supported by a ppt).

Deadline for submissions is 12 October 2020.

The submitted papers will be selected by a scientific committee. Selected participants will be notified by the conference organisers (in November/December 2020) and more information on practical details will be provided then.

For those not selected, student fees for participation are available.

How much will it cost? How many will be selected?

The organiser of the WSED, the OÖ Energiesparverband, covers the costs of accommodation, meals, participation and local transport (3 conference days: 23 - 26 February) for up to 60 selected participants. The participants must cover their travel costs.

What is included for the participants of selected papers?

  • oral or poster presentation of the paper
  • participation in all events of the World Sustainable Energy Days 2021:
    - the Young Energy Researchers Conference
    - the European Pellet Conference
    - the European Energy Efficiency Conference
    - the Innovation Workshops
    - the Industrial Energy Efficiency Conference
    - the Smart E-Mobility Conference
    - Energy Efficiency Policy Conference
    - the Technical Site Visits
    - the evening events (including dinners) and conference lunches
  • free entry to the "Energiesparmesse" tradeshow, one of the largest tradeshows on energy efficiency and renewable energy sources in Europe (100,000 visitors and 900 exhibitors every year)
  • interaction with researchers and industry experts from all over the world

What is the "Best Young Energy Researcher Award" and how will it work?

The 2 best contributions are honoured with the awards "Best Young Energy Efficiency Researcher" and "Best Young Biomass Researcher". The researchers will receive 1,000 Euro each as prize money. The award committee will select the winners among the papers selected for oral presentation (there is no need for a separate submission for the award). Notification of the winners is expected by the end of January 2021.

Where and when is it and how to get there?

The conference will be held in Wels/Austria, the accommodation for the selected participants will be in a hotel in the nearby city of Linz (a shuttle service between the hotel and the conference venue will be available).

The conference website provides comprehensive travel information.

Arrival date is foreseen in principle for Tuesday, 23 February. Departure date will be Friday, 26 February 2021 (afternoon).
