The WORLD SUSTAINABLE ENERGY DAY 2002, the major annual European conference on renewable energy and energy efficiency, was held from 7 to 8 March in Wels/Upper Austria. The symposium once again provided a key forum for learning about the latest developments in energy policies, for exchanging know-how, for initiating projects and establishing partnerships. 
The conference was opened by the Upper Austrian Minister for Energy, Josef Fill, and Karl Kellner, Head of Unit at the European Commission's Directorate-General of Energy and Transport. Then Jan-Eric Sundgren, the president of the Chalmers University of Technology in Göteborg/Sweden, gave an interesting outlook on the importance of global co-operation for sustainability. Brigitte Weiß from the Ministry of Transport, Innovation and Technology illuminated the topic from an Austrian viewpoint as she spoke about domestic energy research & development. The opening session was concluded by Gerhard Dell, regional Energy Commissioner and Managing Director of O.Ö. Energiesparverband, who presented an overview of the Upper Austrian approach to energy and sustainability. 
The second part of the "World Sustainable Energy Day" was dedicated to the winning projects of the Energy Globe Award 2002, which gave the audience the unique chance to find the most outstanding initiatives worldwide all lined up at one event. The interested listeners were able to learn about the projects in detail as the winners in the four categories Companies, Transport & Communities, Building & Housing as well as Private & Public Initiatives held their inspiring presentations. On Thursday evening, a get-together at a traditional Austrian restaurant offered the delegates, who had come to Wels from all over the world, the opportunity to discuss energy matters and exchange know-how in a relaxed atmosphere. 
The "World Sustainable Energy Day 2002" has not failed to continue the successful tradition of past events - this year more than 550people from more than 60 different countries have flocked to Upper Austria to attend the conference. The date for next year's symposium has already been fixed: the WORLD SUSTAINABLE ENERGY DAY 2003 will take place from 6 to 7 March in Wels/Upper Austria. Don't forget to mark this date in your calendar! Organiser The World Sustainable Energy Day 2002 and the Energy Globe Award were organised by the O.Oe. Energiesparverband, the energy agency in Upper Austria.
Highlights of the World Sustainable Energy Day 2002
From 6 to 10 March 2002, Upper Austria was once again the meeting place for the great thinkers of the energy world. The well established "Energy Days" organised by O.Ö. Energiesparverband started off with a festive gala event to honour the winners of the Energy Globe Award 2002, the international prize for sustainable energy. 
A politician who has already gone down in history, the last head of state of the Soviet Union Mikhail Gorbachev came to Linz to present one of the "Energy Oscars". The very best projects out of the some 1300 submissions from 98 different countries were then presented in detail on the conference WORLD SUSTAINABLE ENERGY DAY. 
More than 550 people attended the symposium which was accompanied by the two seminars "Innovative Solar Technologies" and "Financing Sustainable Energy Development". Experts and decision makers from all over the world took the opportunity to learn about the latest trends in the energy sector and to exchange expertise. The conference was followed by the "Energiesparmesse", one of the largest exhibitions and trade fairs on renewable energy sources and energy efficiency in the world attracting once again more than 200,000 visitors. The events have been organised by the O.Ö. Energiesparverband, the regional energy agency of Upper Austria.
